About the work
While my inspiration usually derives from natural forms, I'm also influenced by architectural forms, and the woven textiles of the Middle East. The work is abstract, and the themes that run through every piece are connected to change, memory, adjustment, scarring and repair.
The only truly figurative element is seen in the small creatures that creep into the work, as they do into my daily life, and these are always represented in embroidery.
Much of the work is composed of layers of fabric, either superimposed in applique' or cut away to expose underlying fabric. The quilting technique of trapunto Fiorentino adds dimension. I use only a handful of different stitches and their purpose is both technical - to hold the fabric where I want it to be - and aesthetic - to create texture and form and the modulation of light and shade that are fundamental to the work.
The fabric used is always natural - silk, linen, cotton, jute, and merino wool for quilting. It's mostly fabric that I've had for many years, some of it already very old when I acquired it, some recycled from clothes. The signs of wear and age are integral to the work, as are my personal associations with some of the fabrics.
